Word Wall: How We Learn Our Sight Words

One really important thing we focus on throughout our day is sight word acquisition. Our sight words are high-frequency and knowing them will help our kids navigate different environments as they become more independent. We also use word wall work to practice our communication skills; we say the words, identify their beginning and ending sounds and make sentences. I wrote a funny blog post last year about a sentence-making activity we did using our Word Wall here. Our sight words come from Unique Learning Systems monthly units and are posted in our classroom like this:
We've added a few different activities and broken our kids into groups that rotate daily.  Not only are we using the interactive Word Wall board, but we're also now using our classroom TapIt,
 magnetic letters,
iPads (we use the Touch Chat app to create boards with each month's targeted sight words),
and even shaving cream! This is one of our favorite activities!
Changing up how we practice our words really helps us increase participation and excitement about what we're doing in the classroom. In short, it makes 'work' feel less like work! We love having so much technology at our fingertips, and it's great to be able to integrate old and new instructional techniques into our daily routine. Good stuff happening here!

HAPPY FRIDAY!
