Word wall is one of my absolute
favorite group activities!
Not only do my kiddos have a great opportunity to practice sight word acquisition and phonics skills, but they also have a chance to make THE BEST sentences using those words. More on that in a little bit...
We use a lot of visuals in our room- the kids need to know what is expected of them and when they will be done. This methodology is based on the TEACCH approach (click to learn more) which posits that visual supports are a necessary component of educational programming for students on the autism spectrum. Below is the visual schedule we use for Word Wall activities. We can switch around the different activities, and student can mark them off as tasks are completed.
Today we practiced matching beginning letter sounds to the targeted sight words for the month of April.
Matching beginning letter sounds can be joyful!
We practice saying the words and making sentences out of them.
My all-time favorite sentence
used the word "turn".
Are you ready for it?!
Here it is:
"Listen, teachers- I am going to get together with Mom, brother, and sister,
and we are going to destroy
the school and turn Max
(pseudonym for another student in the class) into a zombie!"
We've also been known to break into song using our sight words.
This morning we were treated to a rousing rendition of "YMCA".
Here's an excerpt- bonus points for excellent use of the word "will" :
"Will take your chicken to the Y-M-C-A!"
Yes, there are days when behaviors abound and, yes, we aren't always on task.
But when we are on, we are ON, and we sure do know how to have fun learning!
HAPPY MONDAY!
