Every year we take a moment to give a big, old thank you to the wonderful peers who support our students throughout the year. This year our peers came to help out at the end of each day with packing up and leisure activities. We have some big changes coming for the 2013-2014 school year, but during this school year, being a peer has been purely voluntary.
Each student who volunteers as a peer received a certificate of appreciation and a special card made by my students. My class picked three adjectives to describe each peer, then glued the adjectives to a card that read "Mrs. Rubel's class thinks you are..."
The strawberry shortcakes that the kids made from scratch that morning were shared with our peers. They were a HUGE hit, and all of the peers were very impressed by our skills!
One of our wonderful peers and a Lifeskills friend took the extras around the building. My student did the most beautiful job of CLEARLY telling each staff member "Here is some strawberry shortcake for you!" He tapped out the syllables on his leg to help make his speech more clear. It was AWESOME.
Everyone knows by now that when they see my kids coming, I'm never far behind with the camera! Funny story about that...I have several students who, when I call their name, turn and yell "cheese" as a rote response to me always hounding them with the camera.
Meanwhile, back in the classroom, the peers hung out with my students and chowed down on their treats.
We hung out, ate and chatted...
And even busted out some of our killer dance moves!
We posed for more pictures...
And wrapped things up with some games!
Our program just wouldn't be the same without our peers! We are thankful for their kind hearts and eagerness to help us be the best students we can be. For our peers that are moving up to the high school next year, we will miss you dearly and wish you lots of luck!
