It was a happy accident that Arbor Day fell during our Citizenship unit. Unfortunately we weren't able to plant any trees, but we were able to participate in some activities to help out the environment.
We took our WONDERFUL peers
outside to pick up litter,
pull weeds and get some fresh air.
We had the most perfect weather,
so it was a joy to just be outside
with each other.
The kids did a really thorough job walking the perimeter of the school, picking up discarded wrappers, pencils and plastic.
They even did some impromptu gardening!
I've said it before, but I am
SO thankful for the group
of peers that comes to
help us every afternoon.
These students have developed meaningful
friendships with my kids while modeling
appropriate behavior.
Here's a RARE picture of yours truly
with one of my amazing kids!
We came back to the classroom and filled out our volunteer report. Each student listed glued or wrote the name of the activity they completed (trash pickup, gardening).
This was an especially great day for us because we were able to accomplish several different objectives: We learned about Arbor Day and reinforced our responsibility to care for our Earth, we got to spend some quality social time with our peers, and we were able to clock 1/2 hour of community service for our school-wide service project.
HAPPY FRIDAY!
