A short and sweet post on
this windy, cold Friday...
On our trip to the local police department for a tour of the facility,
we parked down the street from a four way stop to practice crossing the street.
The goal was to help our students generalize the safety skills we talk about ALL the time in our class. At school, we study survival signs (think stop, exit, restroom) and talk about ways to stay safe in our community.
We talk a lot about laws and rules and why it is important to follow them. When we were practicing, a car didn't observe the stop sign and rolled right through the intersection. I was frustrated, but it became a great teachable moment for us! We talked about how it is our responsibility to wait until cars come to a complete stop before walking because sometimes people make poor choices and don't follow important rules or laws.
We're always working towards our endgame of independent living, and this was a great exercise for our group! We are starting to plan our community-based instruction trips for next year, and practicing our safety skills when crossing the street
will definitely make the list.
Stay tuned for next week's post about our visit to the police station!
