Every Spring, my group participates in a different project - one year we created books about ourselves, another year the kids selected topics and made posters (they came up with some wild topics like 'hair' and 'tires'!). Once the projects are completed, we have a formal presentation for peers, parents and staff. We practice, practice and practice some more...
This year, in conjunction with a ULS unit we completed in February called "It's a Big World", we chose six countries to study. I ordered bare books (these are my hands-down favorite materials to order from Lakeshore), and my kids got to work. Each student was assigned a country, and, with help from parents and our classroom staff, he or she used library materials and the Internet to answer the following questions:
1. What is the national flag?
2. What is the climate/geography?
3. What religions are practiced?
4. What is the currency?
5. What language is spoken?
6. What are some fun facts?
My students typed, cut, glued and practiced like crazy for an entire month!
We sent out formal invitations...
Our guest list was IMPRESSIVE...we invited our local administrators and were incredibly nervous excited to receive RSVPs from our district superintendent, the director of our special education cooperative, the former principal from our local elementary school, the assistant director of special education for our district and several building staff members! We were also beyond thrilled to hear that some of our parents and friends from our general education classes were planning to come. It was a full house!
The pressure was on, but the kids stepped up and impressed everyone!
Check out the great flags
the kids made last week!
We had a great turnout!
The microphone was a big
motivator for the kids...
Everyone did a great job sharing
their books with the audience!
And check out the crowd!
The kids impressed everyone
by reading loudly and clearly.
Our emcee and presenter
did an incredible job!
Proud of a job well done!
I just can't say enough how incredibly proud I am of this group. They worked tirelessly on this project, and their efforts were visible! I also can't thank our wonderful audience enough. It warms my teacher heart to see so many people with such full schedules take the time to come see our presentations.
I am extra proud to be
a special education teacher today.
What a great project! I am glad so many people came to support your students. Looks like they had fun, too! :-)
