We've had a hectic week around here filled with meetings, absences and projects, so I'm going to keep this
post a little shorter than usual. I wanted to show you something that's
worked really well for us when we're working individually with students.
We spend an hour in the morning working on 1:1 instruction- during this
time we focus on academic goals and objectives (from each student's
Individualized Instruction Plan). We practice, practice, practice
different skills like time telling, money identification, reading and
computation. These are skills we integrate into group instruction too;
but it is also necessary to target these skills individually with our
kids.
To
help our kids get through direct instruction, I find it helpful to
provide kids with visual supports to let them know (thank you,
Structured Teaching!) what work they'll be doing, how long they'll be
doing it and what will come next. We all need a little reinforcement, right?!
As
the kids work through their "work list", they remove each subject as it
is completed. At the end, they are able to choose a break activity like
iPad time or reading a library book. The kids feel like they're in
control and typically behaviors decrease.
Here's one of my kids practicing time to the quarter hour- hard worker!
Here's
another one of my kids matching colors. Each student is working on
different goals and objectives, so this time is great for working
individually at each student's own pace.
Back to class for me now!
HAPPY FRIDAY!
