We were originally scheduled to visit a local apple orchard this morning, but we decided to reschedule for next Friday due to the rainy weather which of course turned out to be sunny and warm. To make up for some understandable disappointment floating around our room this morning, we decided to break out the blender and make some smoothies!
To adapt recipes so my kids are able to read them,
I added pictures from Google Images and Symbolstix .
Here's what our recipes look like:
We typically cook in the kitchen but decided to do our activity in the classroom since we weren't going to be using anything other than a blender and cold ingredients. We fired up the overhead so everyone could access the recipe, gathered our ingredients and got to work.
Everyone took turns reading and completing a step.
Yours truly forgot to thaw the orange juice concentrate, so the first batch resulted in several not-so-happy faces!
After everyone had a chance to enjoy a smoothie, we portioned out the remainder and took samples to different friends in the building. The student below was absolutely fantastic at greeting everyone, offering a smoothie and describing the ingredients. I was SO IMPRESSED!
Below is my awesome student with one of our favorite friends, our school counselor, Mrs. W. Mrs. W. has been a great help in making sure that we have wonderful peer helpers throughout the day.
Back in the room, everyone completed a recipe review which asks students to evaluate the recipe's difficulty level, whether or not they enjoyed the recipe and how healthy the recipe's ingredients were.
We were glad to have such a fun backup plan today- can't beat Friday morning smoothies!
HAPPY FRIDAY!
