One of the activity groups at our school started a fundraiser this year to raise money to offset the enormous cost of treatment for the three-year-old daughter of one of our teachers who is battling liver cancer. For each hour of community service completed, a $10 donation will be made to a fund in her name. For more information on her fight, click here.
I was pleasantly surprised at how well received my students were by the residents at the nursing home. To be honest, I was as nervous about their behavior as I was about ours!
The kids really enjoyed
meeting the residents;
meeting the residents;
it was great to see how kind the
residents were to our group.
One of the residents was excited to hear about life in Iraq; he said he'd never been, but he was always very interested in the culture. The same resident's late wife lived in Greece for two years, so he was really thrilled to read my student's book about life in Greece.
I was very proud of my group - everyone made great choices and really seemed to enjoy meeting the residents and sharing their work. Hopefully this is activity we can do again soon!
What a cool field trip! The experience was a benefit to the students in your class, the residents of the nursing home, and the little girl battling cancer. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your kind comment, Amy :-) I'm loving sharing all of these experiences on our blog!
