Several years ago, our class took a now-infamous trip to a local veterinary clinic to learn about animal care and some of the jobs that might be available to our students as they become more independent. During our building tour, we accidentally walked in on a dog under anesthesia who had just had a surgical procedure completed. Totally not what we were expecting, but the kids asked some great questions, and we redirected pretty quickly to another area of the clinic. This time around, we toured the surgical suite when it was free of post-op pets, learned about pet x-rays and safety and toured the kennel area. The kids had a blast, and Dr. Craig did a great job explaining the day to day operations of the clinic to the class. He even passed out some candy at the end of our visit!
Here is one of my students holding a surgical artifact. The kids were very interested in Dr. Craig's animal stories!
We saw the area where the animals are kept at the clinic. The kids asked some thoughtful questions about the animals they saw.
The resident cat greeted us and allowed us to pet her. Dr. Craig said that she is sometimes pretty grumpy, but she was nothing but sweet with my group!
Dr. Craig showed our class the proper way to give a dog a treat, then he let the kids take turns petting this patient pup.
We even had a minute for a silly selfie!
We really appreciate having the opportunity to visit different community businesses as part of our community-based instruction program. We feel very lucky to live in such an inclusive community!
