Giddyup!

The day our class has been waiting for finally arrived! At 9am today we were greeted by our wonderful community bus driver, Mr. H., and driven about fifteen minutes north of our school to the Agape Therapeutic Riding Center to participate in a horsemanship class.  Our class, the other lifeskills class in our building and two high school classes joined us to tour the farm, meet some of the horses and learn about horse care. The staff at Agape did a great job differentiating instruction and making our classes feel welcome.

Could this day have been any nicer? The initial forecast included rain, but the skies this morning were beautiful and clear. PERFECTION!
After donning helmets, we participated in a visual scavenger hunt to help familiarize students with the farm.

Then we headed into the stable to take turns walking one of the ponies.
We learned what prompts to use when encouraging the pony to walk and stop.
The kids loved saying "walk on" and "whoa" to the pony!
I was really proud of the careful, kind way my students interacted with the animals!
We wrapped up our first visit to Agape with some 1:1 time with a horse.
It was a great trip for our kids, and we're looking forward to our next visit! What a perfect end to our week!

HAPPY FRIDAY!
