Exploring December Holidays: Las Posadas!

Today we began our unit on December holidays- this is such a fun month around here! We talk about all of the different holidays, learning about traditions around the world and making connections between other cultures and our own. We started by reading a ULS story about Las Posadas. The kids love using our classroom iPads to read along with the overhead.

Our peers help us follow along as we focus on reading each word of the story. We use picture clues to answer who, what, where and when questions about the lesson.
The kids loved learning about the different traditions associated with Las Posadas.
We supplemented the lesson by looking at digital pictures of tamales and rice; the kids used Visualizing and Verbalizing strategies to describe the pictures.
The iPads allow students to look through the chapter to answer comprehension questions at the end of the lesson.
As we completed the comprehension fill-in-the-blank questions, we practiced reading sentences out loud.
Finally, we watched a short video about Las Posadas traditions. It was a great way to review what we learned during the lesson while listening to Feliz Navidad.

On a silly note, I started out my day with a student coming off the bus, pointing at me, yelling "You're a mean one, Mr. Grinch! Gotta love the holiday season!
See the resemblance??
