Getting started: fruit salad party!

Since we're starting back in what  feels like the MIDDLE of summer, I thought that fruit salad would be the perfect recipe for our very first cooking class. We were joined by our two wonderful peers (more on that later) and our fabulous occupational therapist, Mrs. E. and had a good time getting to know each other while we cooked.

We started by talking about all of the different fruit; we investigated the shape, color, weight and texture of each fruit. The kids made hilarious faces!

We lifted, rubbed, sniffed and shook...
Next it was time to get down to business.
We carefully practiced our cutting skills, talking about what parts of each fruit were safe to eat.

We worked like crazy until the fruit salad was complete! It was perfect that our occupational therapist was on hand to help the group use utensils correctly and safely.

We were finally able to enjoy the
'fruits' of our labor (hardy har!)!
One of our new 6th graders absolutely shined as he took around a tray of samples for our administrative staff.
He and his brother practiced greetings, offering food and being gracious when someone declined.
It was a perfect start to a great year of cooking class!
